Beta Upsilon Chi

Beta Upsilon Chi exists to establish brotherhood and unity among college men based on the common bond of Jesus Christ. We are a lifelong brotherhood of committed Christian men seeking the bonds of brotherhood and unity through the avenue of a social fraternity on a college campus.

Throughout my freshman year, I was introduced to BYX brothers through mutual friends. At the time, I had no idea what BYX was or that a Christian fraternity even existed. I was hesitant and guarded against the idea of joining a fraternity due to the social stigma that accompanied the word, but I was interested in learning more about this organization and why it sounded so different from the others on campus.

I attended the first rush event and was shocked to find myself surrounded by solid Christian men who expressed genuine interest in my life and my relationship with the Lord. This organization sponsored an uplifting environment that fostered real brotherhood and made me feel like I genuinely belonged. After that initial encounter, I was sold and decided to pledge the spring semester of my sophomore year. Since then, I have made friendships stronger than any I have ever had with people I grew up with for the previous 15 or more years of my life.

I believe that training for Godliness is an incredibly important aspect of a Christian man's life, but holds a special significance in being an integral part of the college experience. Being a member of BYX has allowed me to grow spiritually and develop relationships that will last a life time.

Leadership in BYX

During my time in Beta Upsilon Chi, I have served as an Assistant Pledge Trainer for three consecutive semesters and as Pledge Captain for two consecutive semesters.

As an Assistant Pledge Trainer, it was my responsibility to help the Pledge Captain recruit incoming freshmen and other Auburn students, plan rush events, plan a semester-long pledgeship process and mentor and serve new members as they work toward initiation. Through this position, I have had the privilege of being a personal mentor to nearly 30 young men at Auburn.

As Pledge Captain, it has been my responsibility to facilitate all aspects of recruitment, rush and pledgeship while managing a team of four to five assistant pledge trainers, a recruitment chair and a rush chair to efficiently perform all necessary operational functions of our fraternity.

I believe that my biggest accomplishment while serving in this particular officer position has been realized in the revitalization of our recruitment strategy. Before taking office, BYX at Auburn had largely relied on word-of-mouth and relation-based recruiting which consistently brought in small pledge classes of between five and ten members. To change this trend, I have utilized sources of recruitment such as our alumni base, social media, information on incoming freshmen provided by the university, local churches, and personal contacts provided by existing members. Through collaboration with my team of assistants, we have been able to recruit an outstanding class of 14 Auburn freshmen and sophomores, increasing the size of our chapter by 58%. This class will tie for the largest pledge class initiated in all 10 years of Auburn BYX history.

This experience has shown me how important communication is between team members and how important it is to empower your team members so that they will work with strong motivation to achieve the goals you have set for the organization or task at hand. Having and communicating a clear and cohesive vision that is shared positively with team members is the underlying force that has lead to the success of recruitment during my term as Pledge Captain.
