The Result
In less than two weeks, nearly 700 item numbers and more than 3000 parts have been transferred to the new warehouse location successfully. With the system operating through a team of six individuals, productivity is projected to increase significantly once additional resources are obtained and a team of 18 members is established as originally determined in the warehouse relocation project plan.
In the 700 item numbers that have been moved, the team has experienced only seven mishaps, three of which were IT-related issues that were resolved at the corporate level. This leaves a 0.005% error found in the relocation system due to human fault.
Please refer to the pictures below to see an example of newly organized inventory in the new warehouse location.
Key Reflections
-
Lean Manufacturing
-
Eliminating waste without sacrificing productivity was important as we determined the resources needed to make the move efficient.
-
-
Communication
-
Communication between groups was vital to the success of the project since each part had to go through an intricate list of steps before it was ready for relocation. Lack of communication resulted in the few errors we witnessed.
-
-
Resource Allocation
-
It was important to determine which team member was most competent in a certain area of the project. Allowing members to play to their strengths improves efficiency and helps the task become more enjoyable.
-
-
Project Management
-
Brainstorming and developing a plan to accomplish a specific goal is crucial in seeing a well-managed project through to the end. Performing test runs and communicating with team members about their specific tasks provides useful insight to any problems or inefficiencies you may encounter.
-
-
Inventory Management
-
Managing a company's inventory is important to the bottom line. Since the income statement and balance sheet depend on accurate reports of inventory, management must be maintained at a consistently acceptable level to prevent monetary losses in the form of write-offs or prolonged outages.
